About the collective
TRIBE – Multidisciplinary Visual Performances is a non-profit 501(c)(3), Brooklyn-based, Afrofuturistic arts collective led by artistic director and choreographer Shamel Pitts (2020 Guggenheim Fellow). TRIBE was created with the dream to soon become a synonym of artistic experience that connects gifted individuals in our present era to re-imagine and cultivate an alternative new future.
Works
TOUCH OF RED
A new duet of two men that takes place inside of a contemporary boxing/wrestling ring. Its research will deal with the allowance of black men to soften; the power in vulnerability; the meeting point of two individuals within a boxed space.
Solace of RED
A performance art residency incubator initiated by TRIBE’s Artistic Director Shamel Pitts, Solace of RED intertwines different art languages to create one live performance experience.
Lake of RED (2020)
A short film, a poetic audiovisual performance art installation that takes place inside a fragmented space. Within the short film, Shamel Pitts deploys his unique style of choreography, inspired by Gaga movement language, nightlife, whilst exploring a close dialogue with the lights that occupy (and transform) the surroundings.
BLACK HOLE – Trilogy And Triathlon
BLACK HOLE researches and shares an odyssey where three Black performers create a trinity of vigor, Afrofuturism, and embrace. It is the third multidisciplinary live art work in Shamel Pitt’s “BLACK Series.”
BLACK VELVET – Architectures And Archetypes (2016)
Award Winning multidisciplinary performance art work. BLACK VELVET is a celebration of the many textures, beauty, delicacy, and power within us. It is an art piece that aims to share and reflect on the colorfulness of blackness in a relationship of love, comradery, and compassion.
BLACK BOX – Little Black Book of RED (2015)
An enigmatic performance featuring a solo by Shamel Pitts. Buoyed by his trademark expressive movement, Pitts employs spoken word, evocative lighting, and video to construct a personal, poetic narrative about the search for identity and striving for survival amidst impermanence.
