About the collective

TRIBE – Multidisciplinary Visual Performances is a non-profit 501(c)(3), Brooklyn-based, Afrofuturistic arts collective led by artistic director and choreographer Shamel Pitts (2020 Guggenheim Fellow). TRIBE was created with the dream to soon become a synonym of artistic experience that connects gifted individuals in our present era to re-imagine and cultivate an alternative new future.

Works

Touch of RED

TOUCH OF RED

A new duet of two men that takes place inside of a contemporary boxing/wrestling ring. Its research will deal with the allowance of black men to soften; the power in vulnerability; the meeting point of two individuals within a boxed space.

Solace of RED

A performance art residency incubator initiated by TRIBE’s Artistic Director Shamel Pitts, Solace of RED intertwines different art languages to create one live performance experience.

Lake of RED

Lake of RED (2020)

A short film, a poetic audiovisual performance art installation that takes place inside a fragmented space. Within the short film, Shamel Pitts deploys his unique style of choreography, inspired by Gaga movement language, nightlife, whilst exploring a close dialogue with the lights that occupy (and transform) the surroundings.

BLACK HOLE

BLACK HOLE – Trilogy And Triathlon

BLACK HOLE researches and shares an odyssey where three Black performers create a trinity of vigor, Afrofuturism, and embrace. It is the third multidisciplinary live art work in Shamel Pitt’s “BLACK Series.”

BLACK VELVET – Architectures And Archetypes (2016)

Award Winning multidisciplinary performance art work. BLACK VELVET is a celebration of the many textures, beauty, delicacy, and power within us. It is an art piece that aims to share and reflect on the colorfulness of blackness in a relationship of love, comradery, and compassion.

BLACK BOX – Little Black Book of RED (2015)

An enigmatic performance featuring a solo by Shamel Pitts. Buoyed by his trademark expressive movement, Pitts employs spoken word, evocative lighting, and video to construct a personal, poetic narrative about the search for identity and striving for survival amidst impermanence.
